How to Be Relevant and Important in Today’s Uncertain Business World

We live in times where economic, social and political turmoil has become the rule of the game. The turmoils have taught us all an important lesson: Employment is not forever. Companies change. Jobs vanish. It might have already happened to you.

I don’t think that even the beacons of hope (Generations-Y and X) they want it. It’s too constricting. They are faced with staggering unemployment and other ‘tsunamis’ of our times to think of.

Everyone seems lost and unmoored in a world where promises of the past--a stable job, a clear career path, a comfortable retirement--have become impossible dreams.

These are challenges of our times. Found in the universe we live in.

Theory of Motion

Aristotle's writings on motion which has influenced scientific thought for almost two centuries. According to Aristotle motions are categorized as either "natural" motions (Any motion that an object does naturally - without being forced) or "violent" motions (any motion that required a force as a "violent motion" - He did not mean violent in the modern sense).

We can infer from Aristotle's view of motion that "it requires a force to make an object move in an unnatural" manner - or, more simply, "motion requires force".  Withdrawing the force, the object will stop moving.

In the context of this article, you must remain in motion to be relevant in the current uncertain, chaotic and dynamic world. You must keep moving and keep working to the best of your ability because nothing in life is stagnant but in perpetual motion.

Which direction are you moving to?

Are you Moving Forward—or Stuck in The Mud?

The important lesson is that you are either stasists or dynamists. Do you believe in stability or change? Do you want to park on the current moment or you are seeing the future open with energy and possibility? But are you Moving Forward—or Stuck in The Mud?

Dynamism is riskier but a safer position!

Static is about enjoying a comfort zone. It’s about hoping against change which is hopeless. Static make one obsolete in an environment that depends on flexibility, creativity, and momentum. Staying in one position is riskier!

A quote by Thomas Hobbes is worth a reflection. He states, ‘There is no such thing as perpetual tranquillity of mind while we live here; because life itself is but motion, and can never be without desire, nor without fear, no more than without sense.’

The only constant thing is an uneasy and vast change.

Change can be tough. Unfortunately, the only alternative to change is eventual obsolescence.

The only true secret is to make yourself relevant and important.

It’s all about rising to the occasion, creating and renewing your role in a shifting world just like many have done.

You have figure out how to be relevant in a constantly changing world.

In the words of Debby Ryan:

Look at what you want to change,......, and start moving forward. It's important to remember that you don't always need a destination. Sometimes, you just have to make forward motion. And you absolutely can.

What is relevance?

Vocabulary.com states that Relevance is the noun form of the adjective "relevant," which means "important to the matter at hand."

Merriam-webster online dictionary emphasizes that is something with practical and especially social applicability within a given timeframe.

For instance, both artists and politicians are always worried about their relevance. If they are no longer relevant, they may not keep their job. Otherwise if they are relevant they become valuable to their fans/supporters/sponsors. Dinosaurs were relevant at sometime. They were wiped due to their irrelevance.

To be relevant, implies to be in the grand plan. It means being an an integral part of your organization, of your company, of the economy, and of the future. It means being the kind of person on whom others depend, whether for leadership, expertise, acumen, or emotional support.

How to ensure your relevant and important in life

Know and understand yourself:   If you don't understand who you are, and where you're "coming from, you can't possibly lead or influence others." Know yourself at the deepest level so that you can appear to others as you are, without pretence or phoniness. You can’t afford to a proxy to yourself. Take an account of your strengths and know how to work and improve on your weaknesses.

Gain Mastery/Expertise in a Certain Discipline or field: Expertise is the prize. Mastery is essential because, if you have no useful skills, you cannot be useful to others. It’s because of expertise and mastery that others look upon you for direction. Mastery includes not only the skills and competences but other interpersonal aspects of life. But you can’t be a master of all trades.

Expertise requires a continuous personal improvement over time. You will require commitment, clear conscience and a value system that will ensure you handle the deeply rooted systems that may be holding you back. Read more books, meet new people, be curious, have an hunger for knowledge etc. Some will say they don’t have time! But technology presents an opportunity in having audio books, podcasts etc. A basic Smartphone is really an assent on this.

Build on Networks and Professional Groups: It provides a platform to market your abilities and competences. Networks and professional groups brings people together, it creates relevance through the deep connection that brings people together. Attends to webinars, seminars, and conferences and register for courses, try online platforms. These will not only provide great insights but also help in gaining networks. Meeting people is good, but remember negative friends will keep us down, while positive friends can keep us moving forward.

Take More Action than Rhetoric:Have a vision and stick to it. It’ll not be a walk in park. But remember it is your actions, ultimately, that make you relevant to others. It is through action that you change yourself and change the world. Without action, even a great and brilliant mind and soul remains entirely irrelevant. It’s about three words: Practice, Practice, Practice!

Conclusion

Relevance and importance is the only job security that exists in today's uncertain business world.  Mark Victor Hansen crowns it by stating that we all control our future, your destiny. What you think about comes about. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be.

It all about putting your future in good hands: your own. You can’t leave it to no one else to determine my destiny.

You must take ownership of your life in order to be relevant and important. There’s no such thing as standing still. The real question in today’s economy is what direction ‘we’re’ heading.

We’re either pushing forward or drifting backward.

I CHOOSE GOING FORWARD.

What about you?
